Counselling to Support Abuse in Bristol

Finding Support After Abuse or Trauma

Experiencing abuse or trauma can leave deep emotional scars. Whether these experiences are recent or part of your past, you deserve support that is compassionate, respectful, and led at your pace. At Heart to Heart, we offer counselling to support people in Bristol who have experienced abuse or trauma, creating a space where healing can begin.

Our service isn’t about labels or diagnoses — it’s about offering a safe, non-judgemental environment where your voice can be heard and your experiences acknowledged.

What Do We Mean by Abuse and Trauma?

Trauma can be the result of any overwhelming or harmful experience that leaves you feeling powerless, unsafe or alone. Abuse — whether physical, emotional, sexual, financial or psychological — often creates deep, lasting emotional wounds.

We support people who have experienced:

  • Childhood abuse (emotional, physical or sexual)
  • Domestic violence or coercive control
  • Sexual assault or rape
  • Emotional manipulation or gaslighting
  • Abuse within relationships (including LGBTQ+ relationships)
  • Institutional abuse or neglect
  • Community or systemic violence
  • Neglect or abandonment
  • Trauma following an accident, illness or bereavement

You might not always have words for what you’ve experienced — and that’s OK. If something continues to affect your sense of safety, identity or wellbeing, then support is available.

What Is Abuse Counselling?

Abuse counselling gives you a compassionate, confidential space to begin understanding what you’ve been through — without judgement, shame or pressure. With the support of a qualified therapist, you can start to:

  • Explore and process what happened to you
  • Identify and unpick lasting emotional effects
  • Rebuild trust in yourself and others
  • Address feelings of guilt, shame, anger or fear
  • Develop tools for emotional regulation and grounding
  • Reconnect with parts of yourself that feel lost or disconnected
  • Feel more in control of your own healing

Counselling is not about forcing you to relive past experiences. It’s about helping you feel heard, respected and empowered — however much or little you choose to share.

Our Therapists Supporting Victims of Abuse in Bristol

At Heart to Heart, our team of counsellors in Bristol are professionally trained, supervised and experienced in abuse and trauma-informed practice. They understand the many ways that trauma shows up in everyday life — and they’ll never minimise or rush your process.

All of our therapists work in line with the ethical frameworks set out by the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) or the National Counselling Society (NCS). Some may also bring specialist approaches including:

  • Humanistic therapy
  • Person-centred counselling
  • Trauma-focused approaches
  • Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
  • Grounding and mindfulness techniques

You can let us know if you’d prefer to work with a male or female therapist, or if you’re looking for someone with specific experience (for example, supporting LGBTQ+ survivors, or childhood trauma).

What Does Trauma Look Like?

Everyone experiences trauma differently — and it doesn’t always show up in obvious ways. Some common effects of trauma and abuse may include:

  • Anxiety or panic attacks
  • Flashbacks or nightmares
  • Hypervigilance (feeling constantly “on edge”)
  • Trust issues or fear of relationships
  • Feeling detached, numb or dissociated
  • Self-harm or suicidal thoughts
  • Low self-esteem or worthlessness
  • Emotional outbursts or mood swings
  • Difficulty concentrating or sleeping
  • Guilt, shame or self-blame

It’s also very normal to feel like you’re “just getting on with it” — only to realise that what happened is still affecting you. You’re not overreacting. Your pain is valid.

A Safe Space to Be Heard

We know that talking about abuse or trauma isn’t easy. That’s why your therapist will never push you to say more than you want to. You’re always in control of what you share and when.

You may use counselling to:

  • Reflect on the past
  • Understand how trauma impacts your present
  • Work through current difficulties in relationships, work, or self-image
  • Learn coping strategies and emotional tools
  • Simply have space where someone listens — without judgement

There’s no “right” way to do therapy. We’re here to work with you in a way that feels supportive and empowering.

Therapy for Young People (12+)

We offer counselling to support victims of abuse in Bristol for young people aged 12 and over. If you’re a teenager or parent/carer seeking support after abuse or trauma, we can help.

Our trained therapists work gently and respectfully with young clients, creating space to explore big feelings safely — whether that’s through talking, creative expression, or just being heard.

Parents are welcome to get in touch with us to learn more about the process, or how we support young people in a developmentally appropriate, confidential way.

Our Fees

We believe that counselling should be accessible — especially for those who have experienced trauma or abuse. That’s why we offer affordable fees:

  • Sessions with a Student Counsellor: £30
  • Sessions with a Qualified Counsellor: £40
  • Couples Counselling (if applicable): £65

There’s no pressure or fixed number of sessions. You can come weekly, fortnightly or at a frequency that feels manageable. You are in charge of your journey.
